Clay

Enrich

The most powerful data platform in GTM. It can run almost any data play you can think of, which is exactly why it takes a system to get real value from it.

SEC.01WHAT IT IS

What is Clay?

Clay is a GTM data platform. In one place it gives you access to more than 200 data providers, an AI research agent, and a spreadsheet-style workspace to combine them and run automated plays. Most people meet Clay as a prospecting tool, but that undersells it. At its core Clay is infrastructure for getting almost any data about companies and people, then acting on it. Enrichment, research, scoring, monitoring, and routing all live under one roof. It is called Clay for a reason. Like the material, the tool is moldable. You shape it into whatever your go-to-market needs, which is why no two Clay builds look the same.

The reason it feels different from a normal data tool is the waterfall. Instead of betting on one provider for an email or a phone number, Clay queries them in sequence and only pays the next one when the last comes up empty. You get far better coverage than any single source, at a lower blended cost. Wrap that in tables, AI, and integrations, and Clay stops being a place you look things up and becomes the engine that feeds the rest of your go-to-market. That power is also the catch. A blank Clay table can do almost anything, which means the hard part is deciding what to build and wiring it to run cleanly. That is the gap most teams never cross.

SEC.02WHAT YOU CAN BUILD

Not one tool. A workspace of plays.

Clay is not one tool with one job. Here are the plays we see deliver the most, well beyond cold email.

PLAY 01
Waterfall enrichment

Chain 200+ data providers in priority order so you find the email, phone, or data point one source misses. Higher coverage, and you only pay the next provider when the last one comes up empty.

PLAY 02
List and TAM building

Pull and filter your total addressable market from Clay's database and connected providers, then enrich it in the same place. Sourcing and enrichment stop being two separate tools.

PLAY 03
CRM enrichment and hygiene

Keep your CRM records complete and current. Fill missing fields, refresh stale data, standardize formatting, and dedupe, on a schedule instead of by hand.

PLAY 04
Inbound lead enrichment and routing

Enrich a form fill the moment it lands, score it against your ICP, and route it to the right rep or workflow. A thin inbound signal becomes a qualified, assigned lead automatically.

PLAY 05
Signal and intent monitoring

Track job changes, new funding, hiring, tech-stack shifts, and company news, then trigger a play the moment a signal fires. This is how you reach an account while the timing is right.

PLAY 06
AI research, Claygent or your own

Point Clay's built-in AI research agent at the web to answer custom questions at scale, or bring your own agent through the API and run it right in the table. Either way, research that used to be manual runs across a whole list.

SEC.03THE REAL PROBLEM

The real problem it solves.

Good go-to-market runs on good data, and good data is a mess to assemble. Most teams end up paying for four or five point tools, none of which covers everyone, and stitch the results together by hand in a spreadsheet that goes stale the day it is built. Clay collapses that. One workspace, one credit balance, hundreds of sources behind a waterfall, and the whole thing refreshable on a schedule. The catch is the same one every powerful tool has. The blank canvas that makes Clay capable of anything also makes it easy to spend credits, and hours, and end up with a table nobody trusts. The value is not in having Clay. It is in knowing exactly which play to build and getting it to run without leaks.

The Detailed approach The power is the easy part. The system is the hard part.

Clay can do almost anything, which is precisely why so many teams stall on it. We decide which plays are worth building for your motion, wire them to run on their own, and keep the credit spend pointed at data that actually turns into pipeline. You get the output without having to become a Clay expert first.

SEC.04IN THE SYSTEM

One engine, many plays.

Because Clay is moldable, it does not sit in one fixed place. The same engine plugs into very different motions.

SEC.05IN PRACTICE

How Detailed uses it.

In our outbound stack, Clay is the brain between a signal and an email. When a company is identified on a client's site or pulled from their TAM, it flows into Clay, where the waterfall finds the right contacts and verifies them, our research adds the context a good first line needs, and everything gets scored against the client's ICP before it moves on. Clean, qualified contacts then hand off to our sending engine. We also use Clay outside outbound, to enrich and dedupe a client's CRM and to keep a target account list fresh, because the same engine that builds a cold list keeps a warm database honest.

Pro tip

We rarely point a data source straight at Clay. We route it through an automation layer first. That gives us a place to filter and shape the data before it ever costs a credit, and pushing records into Clay through its API behaves differently, and more reliably for automated enrichment, than dropping them in through a raw webhook. It is a small architectural choice that saves real money and prevents a whole class of silent failures. The principle is simple. The reason it matters is that Clay bills for work, so the cheapest credit is the one you never spend on a bad-fit record.

Who it is for

  • GTM teams that run on data: prospecting, enrichment, scoring, or CRM hygiene at real volume
  • Teams currently paying for several point tools that Clay can consolidate behind one waterfall
  • Anyone who wants to act on signals, like job changes or funding, the moment they happen
  • Operators comfortable building, or a team that has someone to build and own the tables

Who it is NOT for

  • Teams that just need a few hundred verified emails once. A simpler finder is cheaper and faster
  • People expecting it to work out of the box. Clay rewards building, and the learning curve is real
  • Anyone without the time or the partner to maintain it. Unowned Clay tables quietly rot
  • B2C use cases. Clay is built around business firmographic and contact data
SEC.06PRICING

Two meters, not one.

Clay's pricing trips people up because there are two meters. Get that straight first and the plans make sense. Current as of July 2026.

The two meters

METER 01 · DATA CREDITS

Pay for data and AI pulled from the provider marketplace. Around $0.05 each, cheaper at scale. This is the meter that matters, because it is where a waterfall or an AI agent actually spends.

METER 02 · ACTIONS

Platform usage: running enrichments and GTM steps. Under a cent each. Cheap enough that Data Credits, not Actions, are what you plan your budget around.

Most teams that are serious about outbound land on Launch or Growth. The Free plan is useful for learning the tool, but its 100 monthly credits and lack of integrations run out fast once you build something real.

SEC.07THE REAL PICTURE

Honest pros and cons.

We run Clay every day, for ourselves and for clients. Here is the real picture.

Pros

  • Coverage no single provider matches, thanks to the waterfall across 200+ sources
  • Replaces a stack of point tools with one workspace and one credit balance
  • Flexible in practice. Enrichment, AI research, scoring, signals, and routing all in one place
  • Pay-as-you-go waterfall means you only spend when a source actually returns data

Cons

  • Steep learning curve. The blank canvas is powerful and intimidating in equal measure
  • Credits add up fast if plays are built carelessly or pointed at bad-fit records
  • Two-meter pricing is confusing until someone explains Credits versus Actions
  • Overkill for simple, one-off needs. A basic list does not need this much tool
SEC.08GET STARTED

Five steps from an empty table to a play that runs.

STEP 01
Sign up and start on Free

Create your account and use the Free plan to learn the workspace. Import a small list, run a couple of enrichments, and get a feel for how tables and credits work before you pay for anything.

STEP 02
Pick one play, not ten

Clay can do everything, which is the trap. Choose the single motion that matters most right now, a clean prospect list, a CRM enrichment, an inbound router, and build that one thing well before you branch out.

STEP 03
Build the waterfall and gate the spend

Set up your enrichment as a waterfall so you only pay the next provider when the last misses, and filter out bad-fit records before enrichment runs. The order you do things in is the difference between a reasonable bill and a runaway one.

STEP 04
Connect it to the rest of your stack

Wire Clay to where the data needs to go: your CRM, your outbound tool, a Slack alert. On the paid tiers, the API and webhooks let you feed Clay and pull from it automatically, so the play runs without anyone opening the table.

STEP 05
Put it on a schedule and watch the credits

Set enrichments to refresh on a cadence that fits the data, and keep an eye on where credits go. A play that quietly re-enriches the same bad records every week is the most common way a Clay bill gets away from a team.
